A "Day Book" (business daily ledger) in Gosport, IN states the following: Dec 1855 and the year 1856. On Jan 28 James A Lyon purchased a "small pair shoes" at the store for .65 cents. Given the ages of his children, they may well be for Mary Lyon.
A book written by Betty Lawson Walters in 1972 entitled Furniture Makers of IN. identifies 25 cabinet makers from Owen Co. One of the men was J.A. Lyons "cabinet maker". He later was a partner in Scott and Lyons business, a cabinet making company. The dates listed for J.A. Lyons show a birth date circa 1828 and working as a cabinet maker in Gosport in the year 1850. The company of Scott and Lyons also produced "brick". As records show they made $1800.00 worth of furniture in the mfg. records of the 1850 census
After the death of James A. Lyon's father-in-law, Samuel Dean in 1858, James began purchasing land owned by Samuel's heirs. His first acquisition was from the minor son, George, of Isaac Dean who also died in 1858. He eventually purchased all the land held by Samuel's heirs.
A photo of James taken August 4, 1892 titled: "Old Settlers" at the Quincy, IN fair grounds exists and includes James and his second wife Margaret "Maggie" Hughes Lyon. Another photo of James as a younger man is in the files of the Roy O West library archives at Depauw University, IN Greencastle, IN.
James, his two wives, his father, a couple of his brothers, his 6 year old daughter, and his first wife's parents, Samuel and Sarah Hughes Dean are all buried in the Lyons-Dean cemetery located on privately owned land in NE Owen County, IN.
