Mary Elizabeth Lyon was born on July 31, 1866, in Nova Scotia, the child of John and Mary. She married Amos Rourke Porter on December 23, 1887, in River Hébert, Nova Scotia. By 1891 the family resided in Cumberland, Nova Scotia. They had six children in 16 years. She died on April 30, 1950, in Burnaby, British Columbia, at the age of 83.
