Dorothy (Dee) Balaker, 92, of Sun City West, Arizona, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2014, after a brief illness. She was born in Sayville, New York to Walter and S. Geneva Lyon.
Dee lived in New York until she and her husband, Ed, relocated to Sun City West in 1978. She was proud to be a "pioneer", a name given to first-year residents of Sun City West. During her 35 years in Sun City West, she enjoyed making new friends and pursuing new hobbies and activities, including bridge, bowling, quilting, and travelling. Dee was active in her church, Desert Garden United Church of Christ, and the Handicapables, New York State, SCW Pioneers, and Ceramics clubs, among others.
Dee was predeceased by her parents; her husbands, Harold DeHart (1965) and Edward Balaker (1999); and two sisters, Sylvia Mottl and May Schultz Junkin.
She is survived by her daughters, June (Malcolm) Fordham of Annapolis, MD and Nancy (William) Lehtonen of Morris, NY; her sister, Edith Fedelem of Naples, FL; four grandchildren, Robert (Jennifer) Fordham. Pamela (Jay) Biggs, Michael Lehtonen, and Karen (Ryan) Hill; six great-grandchildren: Carter and Emily Biggs, Sylvia and Liam Fordham, and Mason and Camden Hill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
