Newell Lyon was the son of Asa Lyon and his wife Esther (Newell) Lyon. He was a lawyer in Burlington, Vermont.[1] He was born in Vermont in about 1806.
The 1840 U.S. Census recorded Newel Lyon as a single householder in South Hero, Vermont. He was indicated to be 30 to 39 years old. [2]
In July 1850, the 1850 U.S. Census recorded Newell Lyon, age 43, in Burlington, Vermont, head of a household that also included Arrietta Lyon, age 23, and children Asa N. Lyon, age 1, and Edward P. Lyon, 5 months old. Newell Lyon was a lawyer; he and the two children were born in Vermont, while Arrietta was born in New York. There were also two women who likely were servants: Electa A. Stevens, age 18, born in Canada, and Mary Sullivan, age 22, born in Ireland.[3]
In July 1860 the U.S. Census recorded Newel Lyon, age 59, in Burlington, with Arritta, age 33, and children Asa, 11; Edward, 10; Van Rensselaer (spelled "Van Renselear" on the census sheet), 8; Hettie, 3; and Charles, 1. Newell Lyon was an attorney with $20,000 of real estate and $5,000 of personal estate.[4]
Newell Lyon died on 26 December 1868 in an asylum in Brattleboro, Vermont. He was 62 years old. The cause of death was paralysis.[5]
