Biography

Newell Lyon was the son of Asa Lyon and his wife Esther (Newell) Lyon. He was a lawyer in Burlington, Vermont.[1] He was born in Vermont in about 1806.

The 1840 U.S. Census recorded Newel Lyon as a single householder in South Hero, Vermont. He was indicated to be 30 to 39 years old. [2]

In July 1850, the 1850 U.S. Census recorded Newell Lyon, age 43, in Burlington, Vermont, head of a household that also included Arrietta Lyon, age 23, and children Asa N. Lyon, age 1, and Edward P. Lyon, 5 months old. Newell Lyon was a lawyer; he and the two children were born in Vermont, while Arrietta was born in New York. There were also two women who likely were servants: Electa A. Stevens, age 18, born in Canada, and Mary Sullivan, age 22, born in Ireland.[3]
