Biography

Anne was the third daughter of Robert Lytton and his first wife Frances Calverley.[1][2] Her birth date is not known and has been guesstimated, partly on the basis of her likely marriage date. She may have been born in Hertfordshire where her father had lands.

In about 1561[3] Anne married John Borlase of Buckinghamshire, son of Edward Borlase, a London mercer, and Pernel Baldwin.[1][2][4] They had one son and six daughters, including:

  • William,[4] baptised on 26 January 1566[5]
  • Anne, their eldest daughter, who married Euseby Isham[1][2]
  • Elizabeth, who married Samuel Backhouse of Berkshire[4]
  • Ellen, who married someone with the last name Turner[6]
  • Joyce, who married someone with the last name Codrington[6]
  • a daughter who married someone with the last name Tipping[6]

Anne's husband died in London on 6 May 1593.[1][2] Anne survived him. She was buried at Little Marlow, Buckinghamshire on 21 January 1621/2.[7]

Anne's will, dated 4 March 1618/9, was proved on 11 May 1622. In it she:[7][6]

  • described herself as late wife of John Borlas Esquire deceased
  • requested burial near her husband in the church of Little Marlow, Buckinghamshire
  • named:
    • her daughter Isham (Anne)
    • her daughter Backhouse (Elizabeth)
    • her daughter Tipping
    • her daughter Joyce Codrington
    • her daughter Ellen Turner
    • her grandchildren Isabel, Joyce, Robert and William Codrington
    • her son's wife Mary
  • appointed as sole executor her son William Borlas the elder

Anne (Lytton) Borlase is listed in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail between Gateway Ancestor Henry Isham and Magna Carta Surety Baron Robert de Ros (vol. II, pages 461-462 ISHAM) that was project-approved/badged in March 2016 by a Magna Carta project member. This profile also appears in trails that were badged in 2015/2016 from Gateway Henry Isham to other surety barons, including: William d'Aubigny, Gilbert de Clare, Richard de Clare, John de Lacy and Saher de Quincy. This profile also appears in trails badged in November 2022 between Henry Isham and Hugh le Bigod, Roger le Bigod and William Malet. All of these trails are set out in the Magna Carta Trails section of the Gateway's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about Magna Carta trails. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

update: re-review completed & I added the project a manager.

this profile is in the trail from Isham-12 to Tiptoft-8 that I reviewed, but I must have missed it in that review as it doesn't meet the project's standards. I've added it to the category for re-review. In the meantime, EditBot will be adding the project as a manager later this month.

Cheers, Liz
