Biography

Notables Project
Ola Månsson is Notable.
Ola was a member of the Riksdag of the Estates in 1847

Ola Månsson (aka August Lindbergh) was born on 12 May 1808 in Smedstorp parish, (today part of Tomelilla Municipality) in Skåne province, Sweden. He was the son of Måns Jönsson and Sara Carlsdotter.

He married Ingar Jönsdotter 1833-07-19[1]. By this marriage he gained a substantial dowry which allowed him to rise in prominence. In 1847, he was elected to the Swedish Riksdag of the Estates.

They had the following children (all born in Smedstorp except Måns)[2][3][4][5];

  • Måns, b. 1835-04-04 in Gårdslösa
  • Jöns, b. 1837-05-13
  • Hanna, b. 1840-04-25
  • Per, b. 1842-09-13, d. 1842-11-02
  • Ingar, b. 1843-09-14
  • Per, b. 1845-11-08
  • Nils, b. 1847-12-16
  • Sofia, b. 1849-12-05, d. 1862-01-19
  • Carl, b. 1852-11-24, d. 1856-10-31
  • August, b. 1853-08-25

In 1859, while working as a bank director, he was accused of bribery and embezzlement. He changed his name from Ola Månsson to August Lindbergh, and fled the country leaving his wife, Ingar Jönsdotter and all their living children (Måns, Jöns, Hanna, Ingar, Per (Perry), Nils and August) behind.

While Ola emigrated to the United States with his mistress, Lovisa Carlen, and their infant son, Carl (Lovisa changed her name to Louisa) his remaining family had to leave their home and became "inhyses" (lodgers?) with the son Måns, who now was a sergeant in the military and whose last name, therefore, had changed to Lindbergh.[6]

About 1862 sons Måns/Mons, Per, and August immigrated to the United States as well. Although Per and Mons would later return to Sweden. [7]

August Lindbergh (aka Ola Månsson) purchased 40 acres of land on 20 July 1869 in St. Cloud, Stearns, Minnesota. [8]

After the death of his first wife, Ingar Jönsdotter, August Lindbergh (aka Ola Månsson) and Lovisa Carlen married in St. Cloud, Stearns, Minnesota on 15 September 1885; twenty-six years after arriving in America. They changed their son Carl's name to Charles August Lindbergh and then had six additional children all born in Minnesota: Victor Eugene, Louisa Ellen, Lillian May, June, Pauline, Linda, and Frank Albert. [9] His son Charles August Lindbergh would become a United States Congressman from Minnesota's 6th congressional district from 1907 - 1917. [10][11]

August Lindbergh (aka Ola Månsson) became a contributing member of the community in Minnesota after becoming a naturalized citizen in 1870 [12] including holding positions of Postmaster (1879 - 1887), Village recorder and Town Clerk (1888 - 1889), and acting as Justice of the Peace. [13]

August Lindbergh (aka Ola Månsson) was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Melrose, Stearns, Minnesota. [14]

Ladies, since we do not have an alias field available, use of the nickname field will have to make do - as done is in the EuroAristo project.

As the name is displayed on this profile, searching for either "Ola Månsson" (the name a Swedish decendent of his legitimate children might search) or "August Lindbergh" will find this profile. Search Results

That's pretty tricky, due to the name display issues. Maybe it would work like this? It looks better at least.
When someone is searching his name they are either searching for "Ola Mansson or August Lindbergh - so I think its important that his name appears to help with searches. Also, records are either in one name of the other NOT Ola (August) Lindbergh formerly Månsson. So, this is why I used that format in the bio. Maybe it should be "Ola Mansson aka August Lindbergh" ??
