Biography

Moire (MacAlpin) ingen Cinèda is a member of House of Alpin.

Máel Muire ingen Cináeda was a daughter of Kenneth MacAlpin, King of Dal Riáta. [1] [2]

Mael Muire' dynastic connection with four Uí Néill kings, married to Áed Findliath and later to Flan Sinna; as mother of Niall Glúndub; and as grandmother of Muirchertach, guaranteed Irish help for Scotland in dealing with the persistent harassment of Viking raiders.

She first married Aed Finliath (Aodh Fionnliath) of the Cenél nEógain, King of Ailech and High King of Ireland. Their son was Niall Glúndub

She next married Flann Sinna (Flann Sionnach) of Clan Cholmáin, King of Mide and High King of Ireland. [3]

Their son was Domnall (King of Mide 919–921; killed by his half-brother Donnchad Donn in 921)
Their daughter was Lígach (died 923), wife of the Síl nÁedo Sláine king of Brega, Máel Mithig mac Flannacáin (died 919)

Máel Muire died in 913 [4] [5]

Research Note

  • It seems that in Gaeldom, Mael or Maol comes from being born on the Saint's day, a servant or devotee of Mary.
