John was born after 1781. It is believed he was the son of Peter MacKay. He passed away before 1871 as he is not identified in the census that spring.
Not a lot is known of John. In the 1861 census [Margaree District, Family 16] he is found with his wife, both born between 1781 and 1791 and a single female, age 30-40, presumabably his daughter, Mary, who was not married. His wife's name is not known. John likely had other daughters who were married but whose connection to him is yet to be discovered.
