Alexander was born in about 1854 at Dingwall, Ross & Cromarty, Scotland. His parents are John MacLennan and Mary McKenzie. This is based on his age in the various census records.

In the 1861 Scotland Census Alexander is said to be 8 years old and living at Burnside, Dingwall. The Head of Household is Christy McKenzie (75). Alexander's father, John McLennan (32) is said to be the son-in-law of the head, which would make his wife, Mary the daughter of Christy. Alexander's siblings, Kenneth (3) and Frank (1) are also in the household along with Finlay McKenzie (35) son of Christy McKenzie.^[1]

In the 1871 Scotland Census Alexander is said to be 18 years old and a Private Soldier The Highland Rifle Militia based at Fort George, Ardesier Inverness-shire.^[3]

In the 1881 Scotland Census, Alexamder is said to be 26 years old and is employed as a Slater. He resided at 8 Burn Place, Dingwall with his parents John McLennan (46) and his mother Mary (45) as well as his siblings, Kenneth (22), Frank (20), Hugh (18) and John (15).^[2]

In 1891 Scotland Census, Alexander was said to be 35 years old and employed as a Water Bailiff, living at Abban Street, Inverness. The head of the household is a Simon Fraser, Alexander is said to be a Cousin of Simon's. Also living in the house hold is Mary MacLennan (60) who is Simon's Aunt, Alexander's mother. It should be noted that the Ancestry Entry for this household has a transcription error. It states that Alexander is 3 months old however the ScotlandsPeople Index has Alexander as 35 years old.^[4][5]
