Biography

Alexander "first appears as a child hostage in 1264, and later as legitimate son with his father at Turnberry 20 September 1286;... he married Juliana McDougall of Lorn (by 1295), and had several sons by her from whom some of the Irish galloglass leaders were descended."[1]

Alexander, among other Scottish nobles swore fealty to Edward I "Longshanks" in 1292: ''Alexander of Argyll, lord of Lorn, makes known that in the presence of his lord, lord Edward, king of England, sovereign lord of the realm of Scotland, he has given and sworn on the Holy Gospels to be firmly bound to him and to save, guard and keep the peace in the Isles. All demands of lands, tenements, castles and all manner of transgressions made between himself and Alexander of the Isles, son of Angus, son of Donald, shall cease and be put to rest. He grants that he will not receive or support any wrongdoer, naming especially Roland, son of Alan, and Duncan, son of Dougal, if they do not wish to be obedient to the said king. He grants and promises with all power to aid Sir John Comyn and Sir James, steward of Scotland, two of the guardians of the realm.[2]

Alexander chose to support Edward Balliol in his claim to the throne over those of Robert Bruce. Once Bruce became King, Alexander was forfeited in all his estate, and his descendants cut off from the succession for ever. He m. Juliana of Lorne, and had six sons: Black John [John or Iain Dubh], Reginald, Somerled, Angus, Godfrey, and Charles.

Alexander's Death

There is some controversy regarding when and where Alexander Og died. The Clan Donald suggests that Alexander died a prisoner in Dundonald Castle, and was succeeded by his brother, Angus Og.[3] Other researchers, a summary of whose various research was compiled by Ian Ross MacDonnell in 2012, points to the conclusion that Alexander was killed in Ireland in 1299, an event that has been attributed to his uncle.
