Minnie Mackellow was born on 25 January 1862 at Mount Sion, Tunbridge Wells, Kent England.[1][2]
In 1871, Minnie is living with her parents and 4 sisters (Emily, Clara, Ellen & Agnes) in Avon Street, Tunbridge Wells. She's listed as a 9 year old scholar.[3]
For a reason I have yet to discover, and on a date as yet unknown, most of the Mackellow family leave Kent and move about 150 miles north-west to the Leicestershire town of Ashby de la Zouch. The two sons of the family died young and this may have prompted a move, but why this destination?? Minnie's mother died in Ashby in 1876. Wilkins-1208 16:25, 27 November 2014 (EST)
The 1881 census shows Minnie in Ashby living and working as a General Domestic Servant for the Thompsen family in Kilwardby street,[4] a few doors down from the rest of her family.
The Head of the Thompsen household is a Wesleyan minister, and in 1889 Minnie married in the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Ashby. Her husband is William Smith.[5][6] "A pretty little wedding was celebrated at the Wesleyan Chapel on Monday morning, the Bridegroom being Mr William Smith, of Woodville and the bride Miss Minnie Mackellow, daughter of John Mackellow, cabinet maker, of Ashby." [7]
On Census night in 1891, the new Smith family are living in William's home village of Boundary, on the Derbyshire/Leicestershire border. Their five month old son Joseph is the first of their children. He is listed as being born in Boundary suggesting that they have been living there at least since late 1890.[8]
10 years later William, Minnie and Joseph are still living in Boundary and have been joined by 5 more children.[9]
Between 1905 and 1907 (the births of 2 of their children) the Smith family move to the village of Overseal in Derbyshire. In 1911, Minnie is 49 and has been married to William for 21 years. They have 9 surviving children, 8 of which are living with them.[10]
