Biography

George Mackenzie is a member of Clan MacKenzie.
European Aristocracy
George Mackenzie was a member of the aristocracy in British Isles.

George Mackenzie (3rd Earl of Cromarty (c.1703-1766)) was born in 1701 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. He was the son of John Mackenzie (2nd Earl of Cromarty) and his wife Mary Murray.

He was baptised on 14 September 1701 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland.

He succeeded his father as 3rd Earl of Cromarty on 20 February 1730/31. He fought in the Jacobite rebellion, commanding a brigade at the the Battle of Falkirk Muir and on 15 April 1746 at Dunrobin, Scotland, he was taken prisoner[1]. He was taken with other prisoners from Dunrobin Castle to Inverness, and thence transported on the ship-of-war Hood to London where he was prisoner in the Tower until his trial[2].

On 28 July 1746 he was tried and sentenced to death, but he obtained a conditional pardon although his peerage was forfeited, allegedly because his wife was heavily pregnant.

He died in poverty on 28 September 1766 in Soho Square, London, England.

Research Notes

The conjectured identification of George with an unnamed child to John Mckenzie and baptized in Comrie on 14 September 1701[3] maybe be uncertain. The following page in the Register records the baptism of a child John Mckenzie born to John Mckenzie and Anna Drummond in the following year. If these two fathers are the same man then the first baptism cannot record that of George. George's mother was Mary Murray, eldest daughter of Patrick, third Lord Elibank. He had no recorded brother named John. Balfour has his birth occurring in 1702.
