John Mackie was born in Scotland.

John Mackie, seaman, Regent Street, N. Leith and Sophia Melville, Couper Street, N. Leith, daughter of James Melville, Labourer, Melton, Fifeshire were proclaimed 11th and married 17th December 1842 by Rev John Hunter, minister of Tron Church, Edinburgh ^[1]

1861 census

In 1861 the family were living at 24 Kinning Street, Govan, Tradeston, Lanarkshire. However John is missing from the record, presumably out at sea since his wife is head of the household and a seaman's wife (merchant service). Also in the house are daughters Josephine G 17, Marianna C 14; sons John D 12, James WM 10 and Lewis E 2, as well as Janet Kirkland 51 (lodger) ^[10]

1871 census

By 1871 Sophia is living at 51 Cathcart Street, Tradeston, Lanarkshire. She was 48 and a housekeeper. No mention is made of John, nor weather she was married or a widow. ^[12]

It is unknown when John Mackie died but when Sophia "wife of John Mackie, Quarter Master (Merchant Service)" died on 23 Nov 1873 at 103 Cathcart Street, Glasgow aged 50 years from Chronic Bronchitis^[13] it was stated that she was wife of John and not a widow, so some hope remains that John reached a good age. Sofia's parents were James Melville (master gardener, deceased) and Christina Melville (maiden surname Davidson) (deceased). The informant was James Mackie, son, who was present at death.
