Biography

Catherine, the daughter of Dennis and Elizabeth Madden was born on 3 November 1792 and baptised in St. George the Martyr, Queen Square on 30 November 1792.[1]

She married Charles James Spiller, at St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster, on 22 June 1815.[2]

Charles James Spiller is described as a grocer [2] silk trimming maker,[3], gent [4] and shopkeeper [5] in various documents.

The couple had three children in London:

  • Susanna Burton was born on 30 January 1816 and baptised at St.Giles in the Fields, Holborn on 18 February 1816. At the time the couple was resident at 51 King Street, Seven Dials, and Charles gave his trade as "silk trimming maker".[3][5]
  • Mary Ann was born on 31 March 1818 and baptised at St. Mary, Newington on 19 April 1818. At the time the couple was resident at Prospect Row, and Charles was described simply as "gent".[4][5][6]
  • Charles James was born 0n 6 November 1819 and baptised at St. Mary, Newington, on 17 November. The family were resident at Gibraltar Row, St. Georges.[7][6]

Charles and Catherine Spiller, with their two young daughters Susanna and Mary were members of Crause's Party of the 1820 Settlers, sailing from Gravesend aboard the Nautilus.[8] [9][10]

The family found their way to Graaff Reinet where Catherine gave birth to more children.

  • Catherine Rebecca Spiller born about 1830. [13][5][6]

Research Notes

Many online trees give Elizabeth Burton as the wife of Dennis Madden and meter of Catherine Madden, but this cannot be verified. The only marriage of a Dennis Madden to an Elizabeth is that of Dennis Madden to an Elizabeth Moore, at St George, Bloomsbury, Camden, England on 22 Sep 1785.[14]

Elizabeth Martha Madden was buried on 17 January 1836.Gloucester Street, Queen Square, Aged 73. giving a birth date of 1863.[15]

It cannot be ruled out that Elizabeth Moore died and that Dennis remarried before 1792 making her the mother of Catherine, and that she what the Elizabeth Martha Madden whose death is stated above.
