Biography

Born 1866 Liverpool

Portsmouth, UK. Cause: Fractured skull.

Note: Joseph born in Liverpool. Joined the army (boys division) and gained an education as he was illiterate. Served in Ireland when he was 18 years old (1884) Irish Rebellion - Black and Tans. Met Ellen Smythe in Whitechapel or Whitegate in Cork in County Cork. records would be in the Catholic church in Ireland. She must have been pregnant. Moved to England and based in Norfolk or Portsmouth possibly. Baby died at birth - Mother went back to Ireland for a month and then returned never to go home again. Posted to Isle of Wight where Nancy was born then Gosport where Joseph and Margaret 1895 were born. They were posted to India with the Royal Artillery in 1896? at the end of the Boar war (possibly may have been in Africa before India but would need records to determine this from RA). Rank was CSM but got broke to Lance Corporal but Ellen requested that he let the stripe go as she could earn more money taking in washing than he could earn as a corporal. Margaret had first birthday on the ship (December) on the way out. Returned from India when M was 10 (1905/6). Posted to Great Yarmouth. Then asked where he wanted to be demobbed he requested Portsmouth. Lived in Portsmouth (1910) - he worked in the arcade (this is where lots of shops were located) acted as a warden (policeman). Died of an accident (had a fall) Mum said he slipped on a bananna skin and hit his head on his heel but lived for a fortnight, went blind and then died. (1911 - 46 years old?).

In the 1911 census Joseph, Arcade Constable, was the married head of household at 16 and 18 The Arcade, Landport, Portsmouth, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England.[1]
