Biography

Elizabeth Maddox[1][2] was born 1732 in Virginia.[3] She was born in January on the 1st or 3rd.
Her parents were: John Maddox and Elizabeth Sherwood.

She married John Hancock 16 Oct. 1755 at St James Northam Parish, Goochland, Virginia.[4][5][1][2] They were married by the (now famous) Rev. William Douglas who kept log of births, marriages and deaths in the St. James Parish, Goochland Co, Va. ("The Douglas Register" of Goochland).[6] This is very fortunate for us because the southern colonies did not do a good job of keeping records and often the ones kept were burned in courthouse fires during the Civil war.
The Hancock family land in Albemarle County, VA bordered Thomas Jefferson's estate, so It's very likely they knew each other.

They later moved to Fluvanna County, VA

Late in life they moved to that part of Henry Co. from which Patrick Co. was taken, about 1785. (Patrick Co. was formed from Henry Co. in 1791.

1799 -- Jan. 27, John Hancock and Elizabeth his wife, of Patrick Co., in consideration of $260.00, deeded land to Jacob Mayo, of Fluvanna Co. (D. B. 3, p. 505).

John Hancock left will dated Nov. 10, 1802, prob. in Patrick Co.,Va., Dec. Court, 1802, in which he devised his son Lewis Hancock "the land whereon I lived in Fluvanna Co.," and the balance of his estate he devised to his wife for life or widowhood, and then to be divided among his children.[7]

John was buried on the Northeast slope of Bull Mountain.

She died about 1805 and is thought to be buried at the Edgar Cemetery Paris, Edgar, Illinois.[3]

Note about burial:
Elizabeth died in 1805, and the only child of hers who moved to Edgar Co, IL was her daughter Elizabeth and husband William Mayo, but they seem to be still in Floyd Co, KY in 1808. So, we can't sure about where she died and was buried.

Maddox-1724 and Maddox-190 appear to represent the same person because: These are dupes.

FWIW, Patrick County didn't exist in 1733, and all indications are that her parents lived in Northam Parish, Goochland County, at least by that year, when her fther John bought there. The last record of them before that is Elizabeth's brother William's birth in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County in 1720, so it is likely they left St. Peter's before their next child, John, was born.

Hi Lisa and Julie,

Do you have any sources for this family? I am trying to see if Maddox-190 was the wife of McCraw-21... Thank you!

Maddox-464 and Maddox-190 appear to represent the same person because: Maddox-190 doesn't have any useful info, but Wikitree policy is to merge into the lower number of the surname. The profiles have different birth dates, Jan. 1, 1732 is what find-a-grave says, so that seems a reasonable place to land lacking other sources.

Redirected to her correct father (the one who lives in Northam Parish, etc.)

Maddox-464 and Maddox-598 appear to represent the same person because: Currently merging her son profiles Major, Armajor, or R. Major Hancock (Hancock-3577) and Armager Hancock (Hancock-2006). I see some of the info on the mother is a bit different for dates but I believe these are the same people please compare.
