Biography

John Maddox, third of the name in in his line as so far traced, was born perhaps about 1725 in New Kent County, Virginia Colony, to John and Elizabeth Maddox.

He married Mary Boyd on 5 September 1755 in St. James Parish, Goochland County, Virginia.[1]

Children of John and Mary (Boyd) Maddox, all but their son John of extant record in the same parish:[2]

  • Judith ("Judah") Maddox, b. 24 April 1756;
  • Benjamin Maddox, b. 29 June 1758;
  • Elizabeth Maddox, b. 5 January 1761;
  • John Maddox, b. December 1762;[3]
  • Robert Maddox, b. 5 March 1765; predeceased his father;
  • Wilson Maddox, b. 11 June 1768;
  • Mary Maddox, b. 11 May 1769;
  • Ursula Maddox, b. 23 October 1771;
  • Sarah Maddox, b. 9 February 1774;
  • Michael Maddox, b. 27 May 1776;

John Maddox "of Goochland in James Northam Parish" executed his last will on 23 January 1777, making his mark, witnessed by Wm. Royston, Benjamin Woodson, Wm. Clarkson and John Sanders, nominating "my loving wife and Joseph Woodson Jun'r and Joseph Pleasants" as executors, and making bequests:[4]

  • lend to wife Mary Maddox land where I now dwell in her widowhood;
  • to four sons Benjamin, John, Wilson and Michal all my land to be equally divided when youngest comes to age 21;
  • to dau. Judeth Maddox one bed with a striped [sp? striped what?] and a cow and calf;
  • to dau. Elizabeth Maddox one cow and calf;
  • to dau. Mary Maddox one cow and calf;
  • to dau. Usley Maddox one cow and calf;
  • to dau. Sarah Maddox one cow and calf;
  • lend to wife Mary, the remainder, then to be equally divided among all my children at her decease.

The will was proved on 18 January 1790, and Mary Maddox was granted letters of administration on penalty of £150, with Benjamin Woodson as surety.

Note: the next record in the book is the inventory of the estate of Benjamin Maddox dec'd, ordered 21 December 1789 and recorded on on 28th. We might suppose that, although the name Banjamin is given more than once in this record, it may have been intended as the inventory of John Maddox, given its appearance alongside his will, and the dates of the records.

  3. The birth/baptism record of son John is missing from the register. It may have been on one the pages subsequently "unjustly" torn out, as stated in the notes preceding the register as published. Given the order of his sons named in John's will, we would guess that son John was born in the gap between Elizabeth and Robert, the latter of whom must have predeceased his father. John IV's gravestone gives his birth as December 1762. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
