Biography

Private John Maddox served with Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
John Maddox is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A073018.

John Maddox was born in December 1762 to John Maddox (abt.1725-1789) and Mary (Boyd) Maddox (abt.1733-1778).[1]

A biography provided by his grandson, David J. K. Maddox, stated that he had been a soldier in the Revolution, married Eleanor Aston and moved from Virginia to Kentucky when a young man.[2] The minutes of the Baptist Church in Beaver Dam, Kentucky, recorded his admission as a member on the fourth Saturday, April 1804,[3] He continued to own land in Virginia; on 7 November 1825 he gave a power of attorney to William Maddox to pursue his claims for rents and profits for a tract of land he owned in Goochland County, Virginia.[4]

The 1840 United States Census recorded John as a 78–year old Revoltionary War veteran.[5] He was living in Ohio County, Ohio, with a child, their spouse and eight grandchildren. This was probably the family of his son John Jackson Maddox, whose family's ages match the census record. He had been living with his son's family for the 1830 United States Census as well; along with his wife Eleanor (Aston) Maddox (abt.1765-1839), who was then living.[6] John Maddox received a pension based on his Revoultionary War service that began in 1833 and ended in 1844.[7]

He died in June 1844.[1][8]. A grave Marker was provided by the Veteran's Administration and erected in the 1900s.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Find-a-grave index says he died in 1845 but the gravestone itself says June 1844. If nobody has any better sources, should probably just say "June 1844": https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVK2-FM6F

An S.A.R. application says June 1st, 1844 (http://interactive.ancestry.com/2204/32596_242395-00170/1047823, but I wouldn't fix the date based on an S.A.R. application).

Where did Boone County location come from? Anything to support the Boone County death location? I was pretty sure his last years were spent in Ohio county (waiting on ancestry.com to start working again to verify 1840 census data in which there are seemingly two John's in Ohio County, perhaps him and his son)
