Biography
In 1850, two-year-old John T. resided in Chatham, North Carolina, with his parents Tarlton W. (age 26, farmer on land valued at $375) and Delila (26) and brothers Archibald (4) and Abel Maddox (two months).[1]
By 1870, John (age 22) and his brother Archibald (24) are living together in Sloan, Moore County, North Carolina.[2] Both were farmers.[2] Neither could read or write.[2] Oddly, only John is marked as a male adult citizen.[2]
