In May 1862 he enlisted as a Private with Co. M, 6th Regiment Texas Infantry. On 30 May 1862 he was sick and in the hospital in Petersburg, Virginia[1] then back to serve in June 1862.
In January 1863 he is shown on the roster of Confederate Army captured at Fort Hindman, Arkansas on 11 Jan 1863 and was received in the Camp Butler, Illinois on 31 Jan 1863. From Jan through Nov 1863, it is a bit unclear where he was.
On 25 Nov 1863 he was wounded slightly at Missionary Ridge (in Chattanooga, TN[2]) then taken capture by the Union on 27 Nov 1863[3] in Ringgold, Virginia[4] and was first sent to a military prison in Louisville, KY. From there he was sent to Rock Island, Illinois in Dec 1863[5] where he was recorded as entering on 13 Dec 1863. While the cause is unknown, he died in Rock Island on 4 Feb 1864 and was buried at the Rock Island Confederate Cemetery.
His brother John Young Maddox also died during the Civil War, on 6 Feb 1862 at a hospital in Richmond, Virginia.
