From Trailing Our Ancestors IV. Alexander Maddux, Jr.: b. 1654 in Northampton Co., VA; lived his early life there. Alexander eventually moved north into MD and settled on the Pocomoke River. In 1678 he was among those several hundred persons rewarded by the MD General Assembly with 300 pounds of tobacco for service against the Nanticoke Indians.
Alexander married Mary STEVENS who died in 1721 (will). Their plantation was somewhere on the north side of the Pocomoke River. County records show several transfers of real estate in this section to and from Alexander Maddux and his wife, Mary, the last shortly before 1700. Alexander appeared to have been unusually close to his half brother, Lazarus Maddux. They were only a year apart in age and were probably married about the same time in 1677 or 1678. Of Alexanders eight children, six were given the same name as those bestowed on six of Lazarus’ children. Each named a son for his brother and a daughter for his brother's wife. Alexander and Lazarus died within a few months of each other. Alexander Jr. died in 1717, age about 63 years. His WILL dated Apr. 10, 1717 and PROBATED May 14, 1717, left all his estate, real and personal, to his wife, Mary, and his son, Lazarus. His other children received only "twelve pence in money.” (Will, Somerset Co., MD, Liber EB #9, page 60.)
