Biography

Sally Maddox was born about 1756.[Birth date, place, and father are still being researched. See Research Notes.]

According to descendants, she married Thomas Grace. Thomas Grace and Sarah Grace were listed among 47 members of the Broad Creek Baptist Church when it was organized on the 31st of May 1781.[1] Associated names of members that were documented in Georgia after 1781 were Alexander Mattocks, Sarah Mattocks, and William Mattocks.

Thomas Grace of Greene County Georgia gave his Power of Attorney to Andrew Frazer concerning a bond due him from Johnathan Wooton of the state of Delaware on 7 June 1788.[2] William Maddox was a witness on the document. In December 1793, Hancock county was formed from the lands lying between the Oconee river and Ogeechee river formerly lying in Greene and Washington counties where Thomas Grace and Sally Grace were documented.

On 15 March 1794, Thomas Grace and Sally Grace were witnesses to a land conveyance by Joseph Maddox and Comfort Maddox his wife of the county of Hancock sold 50 acres of land in Hancock County (originally Greene) on the waters of Powells creek of Ogeche, and noted as being part of the tract granted to William Maddox Senr adjoining lands of Michael L Harvey and Middleton.[3]

"Salley Grace" was noted as wife in the Last Will and Testament of Thomas Grace of Hancock County Georgia written 1 Nov 1806.[4][5] The will noted the children as:

  • son James Grace...beloved daughter Polley Melson...daughter Patsey Atkinson...daughter Betsey Whaley...daughter Tabitha Alford...son Joshua Grace...son Dolby Grace...daughter Peggy Grace...son Thomas Grace...two sons Silas Grace and Jeptha Grace the tract of land whereon I now live containing 200 acres, and they to desently maintain their brother Thomas Grace during his lifetime...daughter Comfort Grace...wife Salley Grace and Son-in-Law Agrippa Atkinson sole executors...

"Sarah Grace" was enumerated on the 1820 Census for Hancock County Georgia in Capt. Connels District with:

  • 2 males 16-26, 1 female 45 and upwards[6]

Research Notes

No documents have been found to confirm where Sarah/Sally Maddox was born. Some descendants speculate Maryland based on an unsourced, self-published booklet, Trailing our ancestors. On page 191, the author states William Maddox was on the 1785 Tax list in Little Creek Hundred [Delaware] in 1785, and member of Broad Creek Hundred Baptist Church in 1781. According to the transcribed Assessment List of Broad Creek Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware 1785, there was no Maddox listed.

One William Maddox in Georgia was documented as a Georgia Revolutionary War soldier and granted land in 1784.[7] The author further states William Maddux Sr. was a charter member of the Powel Creek Church having united by letter from Shoulderbone Church 4 June 1808. The Charter Members of Powelton Church Hancock Co. GA for 1786 listed William Maddox. Another reference to William Maddux on page 256 that Alexander Maddux, Jr. moved to Wilkes Co., Georgia with his brothers which included William; however, the will of that William Maddux was proven 21 Feb 1778 in Somerset, Maryland.[8]

If Sarah/Salley was married in Georgia in 1775, there were three persons named Maddox who were documented as serving in Georgia during the Revolutionary War who might have been her father. The Ceritified List of Georgia Troops, Appendix E, Georgia Soldiers of the line —Revolutionary War recorded John Maddox, Sam'l Maddox, and Wm. MADDOX.[9] These three persons were in the records of Wilkes County, Columbia County, Greene County, and Hancock County, Georgia.

Sarah was born about 1756. Sarah Maddox ... She passed away about 1825.[10]
