Biography

Henry was born between 1765 and 1784 (he was between 26 and 44 in the 1810 census).

Henry Maddy married Jane Ballenger on 4 Oct 1799 in Greenbrier, West Virginia.[1]

When listed in the 1810 census (Al), Henry's household included himself and wife and two apparent sons under 10 years of age; he presumably then migrated westward.

Research Notes

  • Regarding the 1810 census, Henry’s wife was 25 and could be one of the two females enumerated in the 16 to 25 age group. Her sister Elizabeth was older and could be the female 26 to 44. Elizabeth bore at least one son by a Maddy (Absolom Ballengee). Born about 1808, it is possible Absolom could be one of the two males under 10.
  • possible 1830 US Census: Name: Henry Maddy; Home in 1830 (City, County, State): Cabell, Virginia
Free White Persons - Males - 50 thru 59: 1
Free White Persons - Females - 15 thru 19: 1
Free White Persons - Females - 40 thru 49: 1
Free White Persons - Under 20: 1
Free White Persons - 20 thru 49: 1
Total Free White Persons: 3
  • Regarding the possible 1830 census, his (illegitimate) son Absolom married in Cabell in 1829. If this is the same Henry Maddy, it ties his age to between 50 and 59 in 1830, meaning he was born between 1770 and 1780.
  • possible 1820 US Census: Name: Henry Mady; Home in 1820 (City, County, State): Guyandotte, Cabell, Virginia; Enumeration Date: August 7, 1820
Free White Persons - Males - 26 thru 44: 1
Free White Persons - Females - Under 10: 2
Free White Persons - Females - 16 thru 25: 1
Number of Persons - Engaged in Agriculture: 1
Free White Persons - Under 16: 2
Free White Persons - Over 25: 1
Total Free White Persons: 4
  • Regarding the possible 1820 census, Henry’s wife is missing. If this is the same man, it further reduces his birth - he is between 26 and 44 in 1820, so born between 1776 and 1794, but from the 1830 census he was born between 1770 and 1780, so he must have been born between 1776 and 1780.
