Biography

1706 Birth and Parents

Alexander Magruder was born in 1706 in Prince George's County, Maryland. [1]

Alexander was the son of Samuel Magruder, (born 1661 in Calvert County, Maryland and died 16 Apr 1711, Upper Marlboro, Prince George's County, Maryland - Probate). [1]

HIs mother was Sarah, probably Sarah Mills, however this is not proven. She was born between 1666 and 1670 in Calvert County, Maryland, married about 1686, in Calvert County, and died 9 May 1734 in Prince George's County, Maryland (Probate). [1]

Alexander Magruder was one of five sons ( John, James, William, Alexander and Nathaniel) identified as under 16, and thus born no earlier than 1694, in Samuel Magruder's 1710 will. [2]

Alexander was named as a child of Samuel Magruder by Papenfuse.[3]

1710 Inheritance

In his father Samuel's 1710 Will, Alexander is named to receive 100 acres of Good Luck. [2]

1723 Marriage to Ann Wade

About 1723 in Prince George's County, Alexander Magruder married Anne Wade (born about 1708 in Prince George's County, Maryland and died after 1752 in Frederick County, Maryland.[1][3] She was the daughter of Robert Wade.

1731 Inheritance from Mother

Alexander was named in the will of his father in law Robert Wade.

  • Indenture, 25 Mar 1731; Between Alexander Magruder, Gent. and Anne Magruder his wife of one part and Richard Tubman, Gent.; whereas Robert Wade, dec'd, sic) Zachariah Wade, did by his will bequeath his daus. Eleanor and Anne equally a tract called Forrest Green originally patented Zachariah for 500 acres in Charles Co.; Anne now wife of Alexander Magruder; this indenture Alexander Magruder and Anne his wife for £50 to Richard Tubman all their claim to above tract; /s/ Alexander Magruder, Jr., Anne Magruder; wit. Saml. Magruder, Jr., John Stoddert; ack. 25 Mar 1731 by Alexander Magruder and Anne his wife.

1749 Will, Death

The Will of an Alexander Magruder was written on 19 May 1749 and probated in Frederick County, Maryland on 18 June 1751; the will names wife Anne and children Nathaniel, Samuel, Ezekiah (Hezekiah), Sarah, Elizabeth, Anna, and Eleanor.[4]

The will of Alexander Magruder, Senior was written in Frederick County, Maryland 19 May 1749 and proved 12 Jun, 1751.[1]

  • To son Nathaniel, 333 A, called "Grubbey ThIckett.
  • To son Samuel, 214 A,, and 1/3 pt. of lot in Marlborough.
  • To son Ezeklah, 100 A, lying next to Zachaiah Magruder, pt. of tract I now live on, after his mother's decease, the whole -tract to him.
  • To dau. Sarah, 5 pounds.
  • To dau. Elizabeth, 100 A. that was taken up in partnership with Samuel Magruder, the 1/3 where Thomas Edmonston settled during life, and at her decease to her son Maximilan.
  • To dau. Anna, 1 slave girl.
  • To dau. Ellnor, I slave.
  • To wife Anne,, 1 slave.
  • Give my 5 children: Nathaniel, Samuel, Ezeklah, Anna and Eleanor,to be equally divided bet. them.

At the request of James Magruder & William Magruder the following Deed was recorded March 27, 1761 Indenture made March 26, 1761; Between James Magruder, planter of one part and William Magruder, planter of the other part. Whereas Samuel Magruder late of PGCo, deceased, by his last will and testament did devise unto his sons James Magruder, William Magruder, Alexander Magruder and Nathaniel Magruder "Lot Number 3" lying in Upper Marlborough Town containing 1 acre. And whereas Alexander Magruder and Nathaniel Margruder have since departed this life without any partition of the land being made and James Magruder and William Magruder by their mutual consent have made partition and division as follows; William Magruder's part begins at the southwest corner of "Lot Number 4" which is possession of Benjamin Berry, Jr., and David Craufurd and containing 68-7/8 square perches and James Magruder's part begins at the end of the third line and in the line of the main street that leads from the landing and containing 68-7/8 square perches. Signed James Magruder, William Magruder in the presence of and acknowledged before Thomas Williams, Nathaniel Magruder.

Research Notes

Marriage to Susanna Lamar

Clan Gregor also shows Alexander married Susanna Lamar,[8], however that is very unlikely because Alexander died in 1751 and they supposedly had a daughter b. 1766. According to Mike Marshall, Susanna Lamar m. Alexander s/o Nathaniel Magruder and Mary Jones.
