Biography

Samuel Magruder was a planter and merchant in colonial Maryland. He was literate and a Protestant. [1]

Birth and Parents

Samuel Magruder was born 1661 in Calvert County, Maryland. [2] Samuel Magruder's birth year is shown elsewhere as 1654. [1][3][4], [5]

Samuel Magruder was the son of Alexander Magruder, b. 1610, Belliclone, Perthshire, Scotland, d. 25 Jul 1677, Calvert County, Maryland - Probate (Age 67 years).

Samuel's parents married in 1652 in Calvert County, Maryland.[2]
Alexander's mother was Margaret Campbell, widow of Sir Andrew Drummond of Perthshire, Scotland. His step-mothers were first, Sarah and second, Elizabeth Hawkins.[6]Alexander was a possible Scottish prisoner of war, who may have been sent to Maryland as the indentured servant of John Ashcomb in 1652; and then became a large landowner.[1]

Samuel Magruder's mother reportedly was Sarah, possibly Sarah Taylor, b. 1638, Calvert County, Maryland, d. Abt 1671, Upper Marlboro, Calvert County, Maryland (Age 33 years). However, the author Papenfuse, believed that Samuel's actual mother was Margaret Braithwaite, he asserted that Samuel had two step mothers, first, Sarah; and second, Elizabeth Hawkins.[3] [4][1] The Clan Gregor Society yearbook joined in the assertion that Margaret Brainthwaite was Samuel's mother. [6]

Siblings

Samuel Magruder had these brothers:

  1. Alexander (1671-1746), who married Suzanna;
  2. Nathaniel (?-1734).

He had these stepbrothers:

  1. James (?-1765);
  2. John (?-by 1711), who never married.

He had this sister: Elizabeth, who married John Pottinger. (see John Pottenger for discussion of who he actually married!)

1676 Land Owner

Samuel Magruder was a significant landowner in the portion of Calvert County which became Prince George's County when the latter was created. While he bought, sold and owned numerous land patents, Good Luck was the "dwelling plantation."

His Alexandria"' and Turkey Branch land bounded on that of Thomas Stockett. (Prince George's County Land Records, 28 Novemer 1699). [2]

Samuel Magruder's will names his wife as Sarah; as Sarah Magruder she herself made a will after his death. Details of her birth, her birth family, and her early years are unknown at this time. Research Notes

Samuel Magruder names John Pottenger as one of the overseers in his will, identifying him as "brother". This reference has generated considerable speculation concerning their relationship.

That is a good question. This profile was already made before i joined it. I would say Samuel jr. was the patriot. Still don't know about wife Mills. So i guess lineage needs overhauled.

I am as is plain to see using the date the Constitution was ratified. Until it was ratified the people (men, as only men were allowed to vote) could have decided to remain a part of England.

Actually, July 4th 1776 is the date that Maryland and the other 13 colonies declared that they were henceforth United States of America! That is the date we are using to transition from Province of Maryland to USA!

I have just added an extensive amount of material and arranged it chronologically. There is much duplication that still needs to be removed. Links to parents and spouses need further research. Children are duplicated or triplicated and need merging -- see section on children where the Wiki numbers for each are grouped...
