Biography

According to his school admissions record , Charles Maguire was born on 14th Feb 1868 [1] in Southwick [2], a village in County Durham in the north-west of England. The village stood on the north bank of the River Wear; on the south bank, the city of Sunderland was expanding rapidly.

Charles' father, Michael Maguire was from Ireland and his mother Elizabeth Watson from Cowpen, a village near Blyth, about 20 miles north of Sunderland.[2] The couple had married in Sunderland in 1858 [3] and between 1859 and 1876 had 8 children. All were boys; Charles was the fifth oldest.

In 1871, three-year-old Charles was living with his family at 31 Albert Row, Southwick; his father, Michael, was working as a glass metal founder. The Maguires had taken in a lodger to supplement the family's income. [2]

Between 1876 and 1878, the Maguires moved about 30 miles south to Thornaby, a town on the outskirts of Middlesbrough. The 1881 census shows the family living at 30 Stanley Grove. [4] Charles' father now worked as a glass finisher; his 4 oldest sons, none of whom had yet married, had followed a variety of trades: a bottle maker (unemployed), a general labourer, a blacksmith and a worker in a shipyard. 13-year-old Charles, like his two younger brothers, was recorded as a scholar (even though education was only compulsory at the time for children aged 5-10). At the time of the census, Charles was attending St. Mary's Roman Catholic Primary School having transferred from South Stockton School, in February 1881. [1]

Charles mother passed away early in 1887 [5]. In 1891, Charles, a Railway Telegraph Clerk, was still living in Stanley Grove with two of his brothers, [6] , although their father was not recorded as residing with them the night of the census.

Charles married in 1899 in Stockton [7] when he was 31. His wife was Nellie Eden from Stockton, [8] the daughter of a Marine Engineer [9] . Nellie was 10 years younger than her husband. [10]

In 1901, Charles and Nellie were lodging at 1 Peel St, Thornaby [8] with their first child Willie, who was born in July 1900. [11] Charles was recorded as being a Railway Booking Clerk. The couple went on to have 2 more children: Elizabeth Louise, born in 1902 [12]; and Charles in 1903. [13]

At some stage between 1901 and 1907, the Maguires moved to 20 Roseberry View in Thornaby, where Charles died on 6 Mar 1907, [14] aged just 39, leaving Nellie his widow with three children, all under 6.

Charles was buried at Thornaby-on-Tees Cemetery, Durham. His wife Nellie died 33 years later aged 62 and was laid to rest with him in the same plot. [15]

Research Notes

  • Relocation from Sunderland The date of the move from Sunderland to Middlesbrough was derived from the birth and death details of Charles' brother Francis Maguire who was born in 1876 and died in 1878. His birth was registered in Sunderland and his death registered in Middlesbrough.
  • Additional unverified details The original profile showed a birth date of 18 Feb 1868 (which differs slightly from the date of birth in the school admissions document below) and an address at birth of 40 Stoney Lane, Southwick. The detail provided suggests that this information was taken from a birth certificate Also, his occupation was stated to be Telegrapher Clerk at Thornaby Railway Station. However, neither source was referenced and it has not been possible to validate these details.
  • School attendance The Elementary Education Act 1880 required school boards to enforce compulsory attendance for children aged 5 to 10 years. [16]
  • GRO mother's name is Watson; not Walton a change of name process has been initiated.
  • Multiple spellings of surname In various documents, there are different spellings of Maguire (eg Charles' siblings GRO birth records include McGuire, McGuyre, McGuire and Macguire as well as Maguire; and the father's name is McGuire on his marriage record). Maguire has been used to create all the direct family profiles.
  • Indecipherable census information What was the occupation of Charles brother Michael? It is indecipherable in the 1871 census.
  • Charles father What happened to Charles father Michael after the death of his wife? (Did he remarry?)
  • Connection with the Lengs? After Charles death, Nellie moved with her childen back to Peel St, although in 1911 [9] she was living at No 3 rather than No 1 (where she had lodged in 1901 [8]). She lived there with her father and sister, but her son Willie lodged next door with the Lengs who had been the Maguire's landlords in 1901. Was there a family connection between the Maguires and the Lengs?
