Biography

William Tuttle Mahaffey was born on 25 Jun 1848 in Cherry Tree, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, United States, son of John Mahaffey (1807–1890) and Ellen Boyer (1811–1897).

His siblings were:

William died on 15 Jan 1940 in St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida, United States, aged 91. He was buried in Citizens Cemetery, Cherry Tree, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.[1]

His known daughter was Hettie Ellen (Mahaffey) Houck (1883–1977).

Obituary

William Tuttle Mahaffey, a native of Cherrytree where he was born June 25, 1848, a son of John and Ellen (Byers) Mahaffey, and a man whose career included service as a banker, school teacher and lumberman, passed away Monday night in the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John C. Mahaffey, St. Petersburg, Fla. Since his retirement 30 years ago, Mr. Mahaffey had wintered in the southern state. Funeral services were to be conducted today in St. Petersburg. The body will be brought to Cherrytree in the spring for burial. As a boy of 13, William Mahaffey served as a drum major of Company D, 78th Regiment of Volunteers in the Civil War. Following the war, he engaged in teaching school in the Northern Cambria area for several years before becoming a banker and lumberman. He founded the Mahaffey and Kenport Lumber Company in the days when logs were sent down the Susquehanna from Cherry Tree; he was founder of the First National Bank of Cherry Tree and donated the land upon which that building was erected, and he established, and for many years operated, the Cherry Tree Foundry which was destroyed by fire some years ago. Sisters of Mr. Mahaffey who preceded him in death were Mrs. Mary Patchin, Mrs. Margaret Kenport, Mrs. Chrissy Crowther and Annie Mahaffey. He was twice married. On November 3, 1876, he was united with Mrs. Julia Jane Patchin, to which union six children, five of whom are living, were born. His wife was the daughter of Clark Patchin of Clearfield county. Surviving with the son mentioned are the following other children: Boyd T. Mahaffey of Johnstown, Dr. L. R. Mahaffey of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Roland Spaide of Butler and Mrs. R. L. Houck of Portage. Following the death of Julia (Patchin) Mahaffey, he was married in 1894 to Sarah Edmendson. There were no children in the second marriage and the second Mrs. Mahaffey died in 1923. Mr. Mahaffey was a member of Cherrytree Presbyterian Church and an active worker in the congregation and Sunday School.
