Michael was born in Ireland in 1810, where he first married Ellen Lynch. Michael migrated to Australia in 1837. After Ellen's death in Victoria in 1843, Michael married Catherine McCurran in 1845[1]. Michael died in 1884[2].

MAHONEY.— On the 1st of July, at his late residence, Thomastown, Michael John Mahoney, native of Kilmurry, Cork, Ireland, and the beloved husband of Catherine Mahoney, aged 74 years. Deeply regretted, and a colonist of 50 years standing. May Jesus give him eternal rest. Day by day we miss you father. Thoughts could not form our loss to tell, But we hope in Heaven to meet you, Evermore to dwell.

MAHONEY.—In sacred and sorrowful remembrance
of my beloved husband, Michael John Mahoney,
who departed this life at Kilmurry Farm.
Thomastown, on the 1st July, 1884. Aged 74
years. May his soul rest in peace.
One year has passed to-day
Since my dear husband was called away.
The thought still lingers round my heart;
It was hard for me from him to part,
Though gone from me, how hard to bear,
No more below to roam.
Midst all my grief it's joy to know
He finds a better home.
