Note:

"In the 1930's O.K. Parsons* said of his grandparents, Hulda Ladd Goode and Nathan Goode, ' Of the Goode family, I have no recorded information. However, the original Goode's to come to America were two brothers who came to the Carolinas from Wales, as Methodist Missionaries, probably about 1750. One brother married an American girl whose name I do not know; the other married a Cherokee Indian girl named Ladd. My grandmother's parents were children of these two marriages. Her father and Aunt Polly Shannon being children of the American union; and her mother, of the Indian marriage. Consequently, her father and mother were cousins. Such marriages were not unusual in those days and were not considered out of place as they would be now.' Also told among the relatives of Hulda and Nathan that went to Missouri was that one family originated from a minister and the other from a soldier.

"Until the marriage record for Hulda and Nathan was found all researchers felt that Hulda's maiden name was Ladd. So everyone looked for a marriage or likely connection to a member of the Ladd family of Stokes Co., NC. After the marriage record was found it became apparent that Ladd was her middle name. Since we then had a strong suspicion that Joel was her father we again examined the names of his children given in VIRGINIA COUSINS and found that several were traditional Ladd names. Then we began to look for a Ladd that might have married Joel instead of one that may have been the father of Hulda. The most likely Ladd family was that of Noble Ladd of Stokes Co., NC. We found that all of his children had been researched and there were no good candidates for a spouse for Joel. We found that Noble Ladd had a daughter named Hulda who had married a Robert Majors, also of Stokes Co., NC. When we looked into the family of Robert and Hulda Ladd Majors we saw a propensity for using Ladd names for their children and that all of their Children's families were accounted for except one, Mary Ladd Majors.

"Mary Ladd Majors was born in 1784 in Stokes Co., NC. Her family left there sometime between 1802 and 1810 and went to Bedford Co., TN. Joel was born in Stokes Co., NC between 1780 and 1784. We find him in Bedford Co., TN in 1812 listed on the tax rolls. Then to our surprise we discovered that Robert Majors was a Methodist minister. One old legend, that Hulda and Nathan were cousins, would be accurate if Joel was the father of Hulda and, as we knew, Charles was the father of Nathan. The other legend, that one family was from a soldier, grandfather Maj. Richard Goode, and the other family was from a minister, Rev. Robert Majors, would be true if Hulda's father was Joel, son of Maj. Richard, and her mother was Mary Ladd Majors, daughter of the Rev. Robert Majors.

"It is our conclusion that Joel H. Goode and Mary Ladd Majors left Stokes Co., NC sometime after 1800 and went to Kentucky where Hulda Ladd Goode was born in 1802. Mary would have been 18 when Hulda was born and Joel 18 to 22. Maybe they did not have the benefit of clergy in their marriage. Whether they went to Henry County or not we do not know."
