Helen was born 19 Feb 1861 at Canonsmith, Edinburgh, Scotland, the daughter of William Malcolm, a journeyman blacksmith, and his wife Helen Robertson.[1] In 1889 she arrived in the United States as an immigrant from Scotland.[5] On 6 Feb 1895 she was married to Arthur Calvert Merrick at Revere, Massachusetts, USA. At the time of her marriage she stated that she was aged 29 years![2] According to the 1900 US Census they did not have any children at that time.[3] The Merricks were a Protestant merchant family from Limerick, Ireland. From 1855 to 1947 they recorded BMD family events in the fly sheets of their family bible, which is now the property of a cousin of mine. As it happens the first entry reads 'Arthur Calvert Merrick born 6th January 1855.' A later entry reads 'Arthur Calvert Merrick married to Helen Malcolm February 6th 1895.'[4]
