Hello John

There is still a problem with dates on this profile. Beatrice was the daughter of Anketil Mallory and Alice Driby, who can only have married after the death of Alice's first husband Ralph Basset (abt.1315-1378). So the original date of birth of c. 1380 must have been correct. Beatrice was the second wife of John Bagot, whose son and heir Richard Bagot was of age in 1409, so born before 1388. Richard named Beatrice (his father's widow) as his mother; but she would have been at most 8 when he was born. I can only think that he used "mother" for "stepmother", and that he was actually the son of John Bagot's first wife Beatrice Villiers.

Thanks Stephen, but I'm concerned that much of the information on related profiles seems to come from secondary or unreliable sources. For instance the evidence for Beatrice Villiers, appears to come from 'Memorials of the Bagot Family' which may or may not cite primary sources and a Visitation of 1583 and Visitations in general are not considered that reliable for events 150-200 years prior to the date of the Visitation. Similarly the evidence for Richard Bagot coming of age by 1409 seems to rely on a note inside the Memorials publication.

I think before we make major changes to the dates and relationships within this family we should do some research to find the primary sources that will confirm those details.

This precis of a document in the National Archives of England, between William Snape, tailor, of London and Richard Bagot, in relation to lands in Derbyshire occurred in 1431. https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/bf8419e0-5a2b-4a7e-9a2f-66f7198d093f

And William Snape may only have gained Connesley in 1425 https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/84583b64-176b-46d8-8112-1015edb606df

That's a very interesting find! That would imply that the 1409 date is likely to be an error. It would certainly make things easier to resolve if Richard Bagot were ten years younger.

Hello Darlene

There is a problem with the dates on this profile - she married at the age of 10?

History of Parliament's source is Nichols' "History and Antiquities of the County of Leicester" (vol 4, part 2, page 761), and I suspect Nichols has confused two different Sir John Bagots. All the other sources say this profile's husband married Beatrice de Villiers; his grandfather Sir John Bagot married the daughter of Sir Anketil Mallory (presumably a generation or two further back). If Nichols has made a mistake, and is the only source for this person, she may not have existed.

Hi Stephen, I have altered her DOB; it is only an estimate. As to the marriage, I have at this point detached her from Sir John Bagot, but I don't know if that is correct. HoP mentions these sources for the marriage: Wm. Salt Arch. Soc. xiii, 130, 155; Lincoln Rec. Soc. lviii. 275; J. Nichols, Leics. iv. 761-2; CP, ii. 7-8. I see you posted on G2G about it. Hopefully it can get figured out. Thanks!

Thanks Darlene. I am not absolutely certain, but am inclined to think that Nichols has made an error. The other sources say Beatrice de Villiers; but I do not understand why HoP cites them then chooses to run with the Nichols version. Am I missing something?

Your guess is as good as (probably even better than) mine!  ;)

There is a note on the profile for John Bagot's grandmother Eglina to say that Burke's Peerage is mistaken in calling her a Mallory, and her LNAB is D'Oyly. The source cited is the Weber Rootsweb page but what ever source was cited is hard to understand with the changes to Rootsweb.

I'm inclined to think Beatrice might be a Mallory and not a Villiers, as I'm not sure how prominent the Villiers family were in this time period? However I'll wait to see if I can find any definite proof before making any further changes.

Nichols himself in volume 3 says she was Beatrice Villiers: http://specialcollections.le.ac.uk/digital/collection/p15407coll6/id/6483/rec/6.

This may be the smoking gun: will of Lady Alice Basset, widow of Sir Anketin Maloree, naming her daughter Beatrice wife of Sir John Bagot, knight. https://archive.org/details/earlylincolnwil00gibbgoog/page/n123/mode/1up. Looks like the Bagots got their own ancestry wrong, and misinformed the heralds.
