Biography

Birth & Origin

Richard Mann was born on February 5, 1652, in Scituate, Massachusetts.[1] [2] [3]

Richard Man's father was Richard (Man) Mann I (abt.1611-1656) and his mother was Rebeckah (Short) Cowen (abt.1625-abt.1690)[4]

Richard's father died in 1656 and his mother remarried to John Cowen. Cowen moved into the Mann home, which would later cause some strife between Cowen and the oldest son Nathaniel.[3]

3 March 1662/3. "Att this Court, Moses Crooker and Richard Man were presented before the Court for entering into the house of Edward Williams, of Scituate, and playing of his money and goods, and laying of gunpowder about his hearth soe as it fired, to the endangering of the life of the said Williams, with other pnisious practices which proved injurious to the said Williams, for which they were sentenced by the Court to be both severely whipt..." They couldn't return the money and goods they took, or give satisfaction for the harm they did so the court ordered them to be put into service until they reached the age of twenty-one. Richard, then eleven, was to abide with Mr. Thomas Hinckley of Barnstable (sometime Governor of Massachusetts.) as an apprentice for ten years. [5]

3 June 1673, Richard Man was to be reproved for breach of the Sabbath.[6] 1 Jun 1675, Richard and Thomas acknowledged receipt of items valued at £5 each ordered by the court that John Cowin, their stepfather, paid them. Richard signed by mark "R."

As a young man, Richard fought in the Indian Wars especially the "Narragansett Sortie Fight" (Great Swamp Fight) on 19 Dec 1675, and as an able-bodied man, no doubt was part of the trainband. Richard received a grant of land from the General Assembly in Massachusetts Bay, for his war services. The tract of land was in Hebron, Connecticut, and he deeded said land to his son Nathaniel on 21 Nov 1728. He died after this date.[3]

31 Oct 1683, Capt John Williams, of Scituate, brought a suit to court against Gershom Ewell, Thomas Man, Richard Man, and Joseph Coleman. They had impounded horses belonging to Williams, and not having informed him the horses were impounded, said horses were caused "great injury and damages" The verdict was delivered on 1 July 1684, for Williams, damages of £4 10s in silver money and the court costs of 40s.[7]

He married Elizabeth Sutton, daughter of John Sutton of Scituate, [2] probably about 1683, for on 6 Nov 1683, Richard Man and his wife were fined £7 10s for fornication.[8]

22 June 1696 An agreement between Thomas Man of Scituate, the Elder Brother of Nathanael Man of Scituate deceased, and Richard Man of Scituate younger brother of Nathanael Man. Nathaniel died owning several parcels of land which Thomas and Richard divided.[9]

Richard Mann was active in land transactions in Scituate as late as April 1703. In July 1705, he was of Lebanon purchasing land there, some of which he conveyed to his sons 1724-1726.[3]
