The Vinton Memorial: Joseph Mann was lame from a cut in the knee; his wife was a tailoress, and extremely deaf. Early in 1776, he was a private in Capt. Stephen Penniman's company, in the American forces then beleaguering Boston. The following anecdote was related to me by David Holbrook, Esq. Complaint having be en made to the commanding officer, that Joseph Mann, having a stiff knee, was unfit for service, he was called before the general,--perhaps General Ward,--who demanded, "How did you presume, thus disabled, to engage in the continental service? Suppose our troops in battle, and obliged to retreat, what would become of you?" The nob le reply of Mann was,--"General Ward, I came to fight, not to run away!"
