Biography

Research by an Akins family researcher has proven that the wife of Lewis Akins was NOT Elizabeth Mann, and has posted that info online for many years. But, her incorrect last name is listed here in a field that can not be easily deleted. The researcher even questioned if her FIRST name was correct. This last name should be deleted without question.

There is NO EVIDENCE for her to be the daughter of Francis Mann, Sr, Francis Mann, Jr or Francis Mann, the first cousin of Francis Mann, Jr. Some try to make her a daughter of Francis, Sr's brother Robert, but that was wrong, too, as he left a will listing his children, and none were an Akins.

For many years, researchers have tried to solve how Lewis Akin had some claim to the estate of Francis Mann (Jr), who died 1768 in Charlotte County, VA, as Akin made a claim in the late 1780s, shortly before his own death in South Carolina. This was around the time that the widow Mary Mann died (having remarried to Thomas Totty).

Thus far, most commonly used theories have been proven wrong, using the actual wills and known records of various Manns in southern Virginia at the time. One theory that still survives as a possibility is that the wife of Francis Mann, Jr, named Mary, could have been an Akin relative of Lewis, who married Francis Mann later in life, as a stepmother to Mann's children from an unknown earlier wife. The widow Mary married Thomas Totty a couple of years after Francis Mann's death, and was still alive during the early 1780s, at least. It could be that her death led to the legal claim by Lewis Akin. (Francis Mann, Jr's brother Page Mann, 20 years afterward, had not completed the estate for his brother by 1790, and was finally prompted to do so by the legal system at that time).

The will of Robert Mann, Jr does not include a daughter Elizabeth among his 6 children.

It is very unlikely that this Robert Mann, Jr (Mann-7605) is the father of Elizabeth Mann Akin. First, Robert Jr's will of 1747 lists 6 children, and NONE of them are an Elizabeth. The stated reason that a number of people believe that there was an Elizabeth Mann Akin was the actions of Lewis Akin around 1790, attempting to challenge some aspects of the estate of Francis Mann, Jr (d.1768 Charlotte, VA). Francis' brother Page Mann handled the estate, but did not complete the process for over 20 years. Akin researchers concluded several years ago that Elizabeth Akin was not a member of the Francis Mann, Jr family. Francis Mann, Jr also had no daughters, only sons. For years, Mann researchers had the wrong Francis Mann identified as Francis Jr. The correct Francis Jr died in 1768, and had a wife named Mary ______. Some believe that Mary could have been an Akin (either by birth or an earlier marriage), and perhaps a stepmother to the Mann children. This might explain why Lewis Akin contested the Mann estate. Mary remarried Thomas Totty in 1770, and died around 1790. Perhaps, Mary owned some type of property that she brought into her marriage with Francis Mann, Jr. Regardless, that makes more sense to research for the answer regarding Lewis Akin.

Mann-2542 and Mann-1039 appear to represent the same person because: She needs to be merged along with the AkinAikens/Aiken father-son pairing

The father is too young to be Elizabeth's father.
