Note
May have been married first to William? Calder, has son Colin Calder b abt 1840
In 1841 census at Lochend Dunnet Caithness an Isabella Mann is listed age 20 as a servant age 20, with (perhaps her sister) Janet in the household of Robert & Isabella Grant and their 8 children. Isabella's birthplace is recorded as outside census county of Caithness, but (her sister) Janet is recorded as born in Caithness. Janet Mann is a mystery. There were no Janets born to Colin Mann and Janet Fraser, but a Jane, however Jane is still living with her parents in 1841. The other sister is Catherine born 1822, perhaps she is known as Janet?
In 1851 census her birthplace is given as Inverness-shire.
She is recorded in 1851 aged 30 at Holland Dunnet Caithness with husband Alexander Waters age 58, and their children Alexander 4, John 2, Janet 11 months, also listed is Alex's stepson Colin Calder. Is this Isabella's illegitimate son? Colin Calder is living with his grandparents Colin & Janet Mann on 1841 census aged 1.
Isabella herself may be illegitimate, no record exists of her birth, her given age on various documents would suggest she was probably born before the marriage of her mother Janet Fraser to Colin Mann.
There are 2 Fraser grandchildren Johan (female) aged 9, and William aged 2 recorded as living with Colin and Janet nee Fraser Mann in 1851. Who are their parents? Can't find any records of female Manns marrying a Fraser. Perhaps Janet Fraser also had an illegitimate son, who is the father of William and Johan? There is no record of this Johan Fraser in 1861 census, she may have married or died. There were 2 Johan Frasers born around the same time, but the other Johan is listed as living with her parents and siblings. Or perhaps Johan and William are Catherine's illegitimate children.
Johan's birthplace is recorded as Dunnet, and William was born at Latheron.
Can't find Isabella's birth record in opr. Was she illegitimate child of Janet? Did find an Isabella Fraser b 3/4/1820 to John Fraser & Catherine Fraser. Janet Fraser's parents were John Fraser & Catherine Fraser. Was Isabella registered as their daughter and passed off as Janet's sister to avoid the stigma of illegitimacy? Catherine Fraser could not have been born later than 1772, which would make her aged 48 at the time of Isabella's birth.
