Biography

Michael Smith Mann was born about 1792 in Abbeville to John and Margaret (Smith) Mann. He was married to Elizabeth (Unknown). They had four children. His will names his wife as "Nancy" so it not known if Elizabeth and Nancy are the same person or if he married a Nancy later in life.

Slaves

Michael Smith Mann was a slaveholder: His will lists the enslaved persons owned by Michael S. Mann:

  • Amalie;
  • her children Henry, Mary, Becca, Adeline & Sam.
  • Dorcas
  • Hetty
  • another man (name not clear).

They were all to be sold after his debts to pay his "just debts and funeral expenses." His daughter Elizabeth purchased:

  • Amalie & three children Sam, Becca, and Adeline - $2440;
