Lancelot was born about 1533 and he was possibly a native of Yorkshire, England. He and his sons received grants of land from the border area between the East and North Ridings. There is currently no documentation of Lancelot's parentage. The parish records for this area for this time period are not extant.[1]
He married as his first wife Anne Eure. They had two sons, John and Ralph, and three daughters, Julian (wife of George Wilkinson), Margaret (wife of Richard Hestarton, and Lucy (wife of George Wilkinson). For his second wife, he married Margaret. Lancelot and Margaret had no children.[2]
"Lancelot Maunfeld [sic] by advice of the treasurer, chancellor and undertreasurer of the Exchequer," received a land grant of the manor of Skirpenbeck, Yorkshire beginning twenty-one year on 26 March 1561. The grant was made by Queen Elizabeth I. [3]
"Lancelot Manfeld, of Shirpenbeck, York," received a grant from William Flower, Norroy King of Arms, 'principall herald of the noble parties of the realme of England,' dated 20 September 1563. [4]
"A pedigree dated 30 November 1587 was attached to the grant in the library copy, apparently drawn up on behalf of John Manfeld, Lancelot's 'eldest sonne now lyvinge.' This pedigree states that Lancelot's wife, and mother of all his children, was Anne Eure, 'the sister of William, Lord Oure.'"[5]
The date of Lancelot's death is not known; however, he may have died sometime "after the 1587 pedigree was drawn up on John Mansfield's behalf as it does not mention a second marriage." [6] No probate records are extant from the time Lancelot most likely would have died; however, it is possible that he died in or near the parish of Skirpenbeck, near the Town of York.[7]
However, Lancelot's daughter, Jullian, married Thomas Hassell. In the Visitation of York. a family tree is given for the Hassell family, which identified the wife of Thomas Hassell as "Julianna, daughter of Lancelot Mansfield of ______ in Co Cumbria, Esquire."[8] There is a record of a Lancelot Mansfield as an incumbant of St. James, Ormside in Cumbria from 1575 through his death in 1582, so it's probable that Lancelot died 1582 in Cumbria.[9]
There is a Find a Grave Memorial for Lancelot; however, this memorial cites exact birth and death dates without any supporting documentation. It would be highly unusual for exact birth and death dates to be known for someone who lived in this time and place. More usual is to have baptismal and/or burial records. However, the church records are not extant for this parish. Therefore, this memorial should be taken with a grain of salt.[10]
Margaret, Lancelot's second wife, left a will dated 17 Jaunuary 1596/7 and proved 13 April 1597 by her son, George Wilkinson:
