Biography

Historic Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York, is the final resting place of many members of the Marcet family including Maria Louisa (Marcet) Martin.

Maria Louisa (or sometimes Marie L and Louisa) Marcet was born at North 94 Orchard Street, New York, on 23 Feb 1842. She was the daughter of Rene Joseph Marcet and Mary (Stiles) Marcet.[1][2] Her father Rene Joseph Marcet, had been born in Cuba, and as a result of a slave uprising in Cuba came to New York with his parents. Her mother Mary Ann Stiles, has an old New England surname, although Mary Ann's ancestors have not been traced. further research (death certificate) shows her mother as Mary S. Austin/Austen

Maria Louisa grew up in her family unit. Her father Joseph was a tinsmith, but he died when she was about 10, and the family moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn. Her mother kept house and her siblings, Ferdinand, John, Mary J., William and Josephine acquired various occupations. Maria became a seamstress. [3][4]

David Boyd Martin was born on the corner of Concord and Stanton Streets, Brooklyn, 28 July 1843.[1] David B. and Maria L. were married in King's County on 11 May 1871[5]

The couple remained in Brooklyn and raised two daughters. Her mother Mary Ann and brother William lived with them in 1880. David was a truck driver, and Mary Elizabeth was still single in 1920 at the age of 47.[6][7][2][8][9]

Maria L Martin died 15 Jun 1922, in Brooklyn, New York[10][11] She was buried 18 June 1922 at Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY[12]Photo of gravestone Find a grave 95310265. Maria Martin. Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings County (Brooklyn), New York, USA
