Disputed Origins

Parents: A previous version of this profile claimed, citing only another online tree, that her parents were John Marchant and Joan Coddington. Julian's baptism names only her father John. The entry listed a marriage for the parents of 1594 at Yeovil, Somerset. However there is no such entry for the supposed marriage 1594 in Yeovil, Somerset, England - the page for year 1594 marriages is very legible - nine marriages, none are a Marchant or a Coddington.[1]

Possible uncle was yet another John Marchant bp. 1569 as a son of Gyles Marchant Marchant-1150 Another John Marchant bp. 1571 but his father's name not given on the bp. entry, they were all living in the same town where Julian was baptized. Whitman, R. L. as noted below gives her father as John Marchant bp. 1571. One or the other of these two John Marchants probably married Marie Muntague 12 May 1589 at Stoke St. Gregory.

Mother: A Marie Muntague married "a" John Marchant, but whether that person was Julian's mother is undetermined.

Grandparents: The Whitman genealogy, which is known to contain errors, states that Julian's grandparents are John Marchant and Eva Cominge. There is no scholarly research to support that conclusion.

Children: Profiles for William Westcott, Benjamin Westcott, Josiah Westcott, and Stukely Westcott are not proven children and have been disconnected.

Biography

Cross of St George
Juliana (Marchant) Westcott was born in England.
Julian, daughter of John Marchant, (mother's name not given) was baptized 9 Nov 1595 in Stoke St Gregory, Somersetshire, England, which place is assumed to be her birthplace. [2]

Julian Marchant appears to have had sister Joan, also noted as a daughter of John Marchant who was christened 25 October 1605 at Stoke St Gregory. Joan married 1 August 1625 to George Harris at Yeovil St John. [3]

Other church records noted at Stoke St Gregory: Benjamin Marchant buried 5 Jan 1602 at Stoke St Gregory (image 24 of 132), baptism 1601 as son of John (image 27) Mary Marchant christening 3 March 1599 at Stoke St Gregory daughter of John (image 21)

Family

Marriage: to Stukely Westcott on 5 October 1619 Yeovil, Somerset parish register St. John the Baptist Church. [4] R. L. Whitman, author of the Westcott Genealogy, says the record reads: "Stucklie Westcott of Ilminster, and Julian Marchant of Yeovil, married 5 October, 1619." Whitman, Roscoe L. History and Genealogy of the Ancestors and Some Descendants of Stukely Westcott. Self-Published, 1932. [5] They had six known children:

New England

Julian and Stukely's emigration to New England was documented in notes made by her future son-in-law Benedict Arnold. "My father (William Arnold) and his family set sayle ffrom Dartmouth in Old England the first of May, Friday and arrived in New England (Thursday) June 24, 1635." On board were "Stukeley Westcott 43, of Yeovil and his wife name unknown with children, Robert Westcott, Samuel Westcott 13, born at Yeovil March 31, 1622, Damaris Westcott, later wife of Benedict Arnold, Amos Westcott 4, Mercy Westcott, and Jeremiah Westcott." [9]

The Westcott family settled in Salem after arriving from England. Religious disputes with the Puritan leaders there led them to follow Roger_Williams and co-found an independent community now known as Providence, Rhode Island.[10]

After several years at Providence, religious differences began to surface again and the Westcott family moved to Warwick. [11]

Julian died there on October 10, 1670.[citation needed]

Marked the mother as Uncertain, per the disputed section up at the top of the bio.

All the profiles have been prepared for the detachment of "children" William, Josiah, Stukely, and Benjamin from their "mother" Julian Marchant Westcott. Thanks!

These have been disconnected. With the exception of Stuckley, these children have nothing on them, I'm wondering if we should consider merging them away?

Some of the names are matches for Jeremiah's children - I'll look into it

All four have been proposed for merges

There may not be a source for the 1591 date suggested in the bio, but you have to assume that the 1571 date was a typo (or was misread) considering her grandparents were born in 1568.

Beryl, you seem familiar with this town's records. Was there a separate John Marchant there married to a Joan Coddington or Cottington? See Marchant-14

Marchante-4 and Marchant-1145 appear to represent the same person because: Found baptism spells surname without the "e"

Marchante-7 and Marchante-4 do not represent the same person because: Found better lowest numbered profile for merging.

Marchante-4 and Marchante-7 appear to represent the same person because: The same baptism record image is linked to both these profiles. I believe they are meant to represent the same person. The 1594 birth year is more accurate.

There is a baptism record attached to this profile naming her father John. But how do we know that the female baptized per that record is the same as she who married Stukely Westcott?
