Biography

Jabez Marchant (25 Apr 1749 Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts - 9 Jan 1829 in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts) son of Daniel Merchant (1721 – 1790) and Hannah Woodbury (1723 – 1779). He Married to Rebecca A Woodbury on 25 November 1779 in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts, United States.[1] In the 1790 census Jabez was in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts, United States. The census lists 5 residents in his household.[2]

I've found record of 10 children of whom five survived him:

Mary Polly Beal Marchant 1780 – 1787
Rebecca Marchant 1782 – 1853
Susannah Marchant 1785 – 1829
Jabez Marchant 1787 – 1788
Jabez Marchant 1789 – 1820
Male Marchant 1792 – 1792
John Marchant 1793 – 1823
Mary Beale Marchant 1796 – 1843
Betsy Woodbury Marchant 1799 – 1873
Nathaniel Marchant 1800 – 1818

The War Department initially found no record of him on the rolls, and he had to provide additional evidence in the form of testimony from contemporaries Henry White, James Griffin, Jr., and Ebenezer Cleveland. He was awarded a pension of $8 a month. In 1820, he lost a certificate proving his pension, and had to apply for a replacement. He died in 1829, age 80.

Jabez testimony: "On about the month of May in the year of Our Lord one thousand and seven hundred and seventy five I entered and engaged in the Land service of the United States on the continental establishment, and served accordingly from that time to the month of January in the year 1779 in the Massachusetts line of the army as a private against the common enemy, with any interruption or absence, that I belonged to Capt. Dodge's Company in Col. Gerrish's regiment for the first eight months at the expiration of which time I again enlisted in the same company & regiment for the years service, the regiment then being commanded by Col. Baldwin and I left the service on the expiration of the term.. & being honorably discharged, and that by reason of my reduced circumstances in life and poverty, I stand in need of assistance from my country for support, being now of the age of Seventy one years."

In an inventory of his estate, it is reported that he had no wife, had five children, all poor and unable to contribute to his support. He was residing with one daughter, and was wholly dependent upon a pension for support.

Jabez died on 9 January 1829 in Massachusetts, United States. [3] [4]
