Robert Markham. Admitted at Grays Inn, Ap. 27, 1586. Afterwards entered the Jesuit College at Rome, Aug. 1, 1593 : and took the oath, Nov. 1. Left for Perugia in 1596, on account of ill-health. He afterwards desired to be re-admitted, but for some reason was not accepted. He died soon after, at Loretto. (Foleys Records vi. 193). There are two letters in Strype (Ann. iv. 157) : one from Roberts father, complaining that his son had forged his name to a draft for £100 : one from Robert, dated at Gravesend, Aug. 27, 1592. He begs forgiveness from his father, but declares that he was forced to flee the country at once, as reconciliation to the Romish Church was a capital crime. There is a letter from him (Lansd. 96, No. 33) to his brother Griffin. It is dated from Rome, Feb. 4, 1595 : he had contemplated serving in the Turkish wars, but could not obtain admission amongst the knights of Malta, and did not like the service in Hungary. He would not join any powers at war with England. His name is omitted in the Vis. of Notts. [3]
Educated at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. (Biographical History of Gonville and Caius College, 1349-1897, Pg.121). [1][4]
