William James Markham was born March 24, 1826 in Great Valley, Cattaraugus, New York to William Markham and Rachel Phillips.
William was included in the 1830 United States Census headcount for "William Markum", head of household in Great Valley. William is one of three sons under age 5. He had a total of seven siblings in the household.[1]
William married Sophronia Field in November 1847. In 1850, they and their one-year-old son, Ambrose, were living in Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York. William was a farmer.[2]
William served as a private in the Union Army in the United States Civil War, Company BD, 9th Regiment of the New York Cavalry.[3][4] On "Sept. 23, 1861, he enlisted in Co. B, 9th N. Y. Cavalry, and Jan. 1, 1864, re-enlisted in Co. D of the same regiment, being commissioned second lieutenant and discharged July 17, 1865. He was shot through the thigh at Brandy Station, Virginia; at Berryville, Virginia, the bones above his ankle were broken by a shell; at Port Republic he received a stunning blow from a pistol on his head which fractured his skull; and by the bursting of a shell he was made permanently deaf. He is a farmer and an ordained clergyman in the Church of the United Brethren. He is a Republican and has served as overseer of the poor eighteen years. " [5]
William died June 7, 1894 and was buried in Little Valley Rural Cemetery, Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York.[6]
