Obituary

Reverend Robert Wilson Markham III, 72, of Mashpee, MA, formerly of Rockport, MA, went home to be with his Lord on Friday May 20th while in the comfort of his own home surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses. He was the beloved husband of Roberta and son of the late Virginia (Dyer) and Robert Wilson Markham Jr.

Bob graduated from Cranston High School East in Rhode Island as a member of the Class of 1961. He went on to graduate from Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas where he earned his bachelor’s degree in history and political science in 1965. He fulfilled his childhood calling of becoming a minister by earning his Master of Divinity from Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, PA in 1969.

From 1969 to 1973 Bob was Associate Pastor at First Baptist Church in Elmira, NY. In October of 1973 he was called to serve as pastor at the First Baptist Church in Rockport, MA from which he retired in June of 2007. Shortly after entering retirement he accepted the position of interim pastor at the Covenant Community Church in Sandwich, MA. Throughout his ministry he was also very active and held numerous leadership positions in the American Baptist denomination through the American Baptist Churches of Massachusetts (TABCOM).

As an integral part of the Rockport community Bob was a Scout Leader, a coach, a referee, an umpire, a member of the Rotary Club, an actor with Theater in the Pines, and served on various boards and committees. Bob was also a member of the Rockport School Committee serving as its chairman, vice chairman and liaison to the middle school council between 1996 and 2002. Prior to his retirement he was vice president of the Rockport Education Foundation and a community member of the High School Summer Reading Committee.

When he did take time for himself Bob was an avid reader, a collector of stamps and coins, a gardener, a genealogist, and an avid Boston sports fan. He loved the ocean and took every opportunity to be on it or near it.

He is being remembered as a man of unfathomable spirit, integrity, and devotion who through the way in which he lived his faith had a profound impact on the lives of so many as a mentor, role model, inspiration, and example. Despite living with countless illnesses he ran with perseverance the race that was set before him.

Bob endured and enjoyed this life in the constant companionship of his steadfast and devoted wife, Roberta. Their marriage of 52 years highlighted a relationship that began in their teenage years and served as an example of unconditional love.

In addition to Roberta, Bob is survived by his two children. His influence can already be seen in his four grandchildren, who will forever love their Papa. He was predeceased by his sister Judith Yeaw, the late wife of his life-long friend and brother-in-law, Dennis Yeaw of Shrewsbury, MA.

Memorial services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Rockport on Saturday June 18th at 10:30 AM and First Baptist Church in Hyannis on Saturday June 4th at 10:30 AM.^[1]
