Son of Fulk of East Markham, Alexander de Marcham was born around 1130.[1]
He was appointed Castellan, or Constable, of Nottingham Castle during the reign of Henry II The privilege of holding a castle as its constable was considered a high honour and was only granted to men of high military reknown or those who had done good service to the crown. It is believed that Alexander Markham distinguished himself during the Anarchy, in the time of Stephen of Blois.
At this time Nottingham Castle was an important stronghold. it was around this time that the castle was extensively rebuilt. [2]
He continued to hold this position through the reign of Richard I, and into the reign of King John.
There is no known record of Sir Alexander's wife, nor the date of his death.
He had one son, William, who succeeded him.
Fulk was the son of Roger de Bulsi and Ulche of East Markham..
