Marshall Family Legend
Daughter of John Marshall of Burk Neck, lived in Alexandria, Virginia.
Marshall family legend, related by the chief justice's oldest sister, Eliza Colston, holds that Elizabeth Markham was the stepdaughter of the famous pirate Blackbeard. According to the tale, when John Markham, the Alexandria merchant, died in the early 1700's his young widow took up with and then married a dashing naval personage whom she subsequently learned was Blackbeard. The Markham children were purposely sent away from the Alexandria homestead, and Elizabeth, still a young girl, found a home with her uncles, William and Lewis Markham, in Westmoreland County. There she met and married the original John Marshall, "John of the forest." For Eliza Colston's recounting of the matter see W.M. Paxton, "Marshall Family" pp 15-17.
Research Notes
Needs Biography: Biography is currently a list of categorized (subheading) facts, apparently generated from a GEDCOM. The Biography should tell the story of her life. Spratlin-29 14:18, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

April or May 1779 which are consistent with her Will being executed on 17 April 1779 and proved on 17 May 1779.
April 1775 in Germantown, Fauquier County, Virginia, which is also listed on her Find a Grave memorial. This date is clearly incorrect as she executed her Will on 17 April 1779.
A source for her death in Germantown, Fauquier County, Virginia, needs to be found.
Disputed Father
Other records say her father was Lewis Markham.[citation needed]
See Marriage for a possible source for the alternate father. Spratlin-29 15:13, 29 June 2023 (UTC)
John Marshall married Elizabeth Markham before 5 Jan 1721/22 in the Northern Neck of Virginia. Groom was from Westmoreland County. Bride was a daughter of Lewis Markham (died Westmoreland County 1713). (Westmoreland County KGC OB 1:18, 35; SC Book M:316; WC DW 5:176; MRC:128, 129)[14]
[The attached Find a Grave memorial lists her burial in Marshall Cemetery, Front Royal, Warren County, Virginia, though the image is of a family stone instead of a gravestone for her plot. Spratlin-29 14:18, 29 June 2023 (UTC)]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Elizabeth by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Elizabeth:
On the profile of Eleanor Catherine Marshall Marshall-16283 the person who orignally had suggested it merged into another profile says she thinks they are in fact 2 different people and also she is not listed as a child of John and Elizabeth
Mary Chisholm (Marshall) Christian Marshall-22153 she is also not listed as a child of John and Elizabeth
Robert Marshall Marshall-3400 he is also not listed as a child of John or Elizabeth
The 2 wills of both John and Elizabeth do not list these people as children of them and John's last few children were minors upon his death neither mention Anna who married Augustine Smith who is brother to John Smith who married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Marshall very confusing
There do not appear to be any reliable sources listed on Ancestry.com with her death in 1775. I propose to delete all the GEDCOM records in the research notes that are only being used as ref tags for her death. Her death is suitably sourced by her Will—between 17 April 1779 and 17 May 1779.
Is there a reliable source for the Nickname Eliaz? In her Will, she is listed as Elizabeth Marshall and the Will appears to be signed Eliz'a (abbreviation of Elizabeth) with her mark.
Is there any source for Elizabeth Martha Newton being the mother of Elizabeth Martha Markham? If not, I suggest a merge with Elizabeth Martha (Markham) Marshall.
Mary Chisholm (Marshall) Christian Marshall-22153 she is also not listed as a child of John and Elizabeth Robert Marshall Marshall-3400 he is also not listed as a child of John or Elizabeth
The 2 wills of both John and Elizabeth do not list these people as children of them and John's last few children were minors upon his death neither mention Anna who married Augustine Smith who is brother to John Smith who married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Marshall very confusing
GEDCOM records for her death list 1775 Fauquier, Virginia. But her Will was written on 17 April 1779 in Culpeper County, Virginia.

Gudula, do you know what "KGC OB" stands for? I've never seen that abbreviation before.
