From The Marks Family by Charlotte Marks Reardon:
Emmanuel worked on the railroad. It was called the local run from Gettysburg to Tollen, Laurel and Pine Grove Furnace. These were busy little mountain communities. Iron ore was brought up out of the earth at Pine Grove Furnace. It is said that water from natural springs hundreds of feet deep down, just sprung and started to fill this big ore hole. It is now part of the Pennsylvania State Park System and is known as Fuller Lake. Tollen and Laurel Lake area was famous for its "clay banks" which can still be seen while driving south on route 34 between Carlisle and Mt. Holly Springs.
This little local railroad was bought out by the Reading Railroad Company. The so-called older men of which Emanuel was included were now on a run from Gettysburg to Harrisburg. Time passed. Harry and Bruce were grown up and starting to work on the railroad also.
(About 1933) Pappy had retired from the railroad. Sold the farm to the Baughers Nursery and fruit packers. He in turn purchased from the Baughers a house in town near store and post office. Pappy and Mammy moved from the farm in to town. The people living in this house in town moved to the farm.
I spent many good times during summer vacation from school visiting my dear old Pappy and Mammy Marks. Across the road, beyond the little red barn was Opossum Creek. This creek was dammed up so that all the kids from miles around could swim. Mammy and pappy were getting older. Especially Pappy had trouble climbing the stairs at night. I can remember getting in back of him and helping by putting my hands high on his hips and pushing with each step.
I came back to Highspire in order to get ready for another school year. Pappy passed away that year. It was 1935. We missed him. He was an energetic, hard driven, hard working cocky little Dutchman. He made the best potato chips ever. Would slice them with his pocket knife, put them on the hot stove plates of Mammy's wood-fired kitchen range. I am sure Mammy did not like cleaning those stove plates after the potato chip parties. When Pappy would come home at night from his railroad run, hang his uniform coat on the hook in the big kitchen near a fire place, I could always find candy mints planted there for me, alone!
