Ann was born in 1841 at Cheadle Bulkeley, Cheshire, the daughter of Thomas Marsden and Margaret Marsden formerly Mottram. [1]
In the 1841 census Ann was living with her parents and siblings at Adswood Lane, Cheadle Bulkeley. Father Thomas, aged 30, was a hat maker. Mother Margaret was aged 25. Siblings were Teresa aged 6, Augustine aged 4 and John aged 2. Ann's age appears to read as 6 but this is clearly incorrect and it may be a badly written 0. She was recorded after brother John. Also living with them was James Curns[?], aged 14. [2] The age of a person over 15 was usually, but not always, rounded down to the nearest five years in this census.
In 1851 the family was still living in Adswood Lane. Father Thomas, aged 40, was hat felt maker. Mother Margaret was aged 35. Siblings were Theresa, as recorded, aged 16, a cotton weaver; Austin, as recorded, aged 14, John aged 12 and Mary aged 7. Ann was aged 10 years. [3]
The family has not been located in the 1861 census.
In 1871 the family was still at Adswood Lane. Anne [sic], aged 30, was a hat trimmer. [4]
Ann Marsden married John Peter Bardsley in 1872. [5]
This couple had three children named Margaret Esther born 21 January 1874, Robert Thomas born 4 October 1875 and John Peter born 2 February 1878. Margaret was born in Stockport and Robert and John in Hazel Grove, Cheshire. Their dates of birth were recorded in the Norbury School Admissions Register. [6]
In the 1874 Morris & Co. Directory and Gazetteer of Cheshire John was self employed in a business named Bardsley, Taylor and Co., hat manufacturers, at Oak Street Mill, Hazel Grove. [7]
