Biography

Frances (Marsh) Buck immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Frances March/Marsh was the daughter of John March/Marsh of Shadwell, Stepney, Middlesex, England who was a resident of Charlestown, Massachusetts in 1638. [1] [2]

Frances married Isaac Buck[2] c1645/50. [3] [4] Isaac was of Scituate, Massachusetts by 1643, where he was a blacksmith. [5]

In his will written January 5, 1665/6, her father John March left bequests to his daughter Frances Buck, among others. [6] [7]

Her husband Isaac died by March 8, 1696, when there was a division of the estate of Lt. Isaac Buck of Scituate, who died intestate: [8]

  • to Frances Buck, relict widow, one third part including the dwelling house, portion of the barn and the lot on which they stand, 2 1/2 acres upland and a parcel of salt marsh to be have during her natural life
  • son Isaac Jr. deceased as eldest, having received more than a double share during his lifetime the remainder two thirds is divided in equal portions to the other nine children
  • son Thomas Buck, the lot of upland where his house stands and a parcel of salt marsh
  • the lawful representative on son James deceased, 1/2 of the southerly part of the Great Lot, 1/2 the westerly part of upland north of the highway
  • son Joseph Buck, one ninth part being 24 rods of the westerly portion of upland
  • son Jonathan Buck, , one ninth part being 16 rods of the easterly upland and the westerly portion of the barn, land between the barn and common land
  • son Benjamin Buck, one ninth part being the northerly part of the Great Lot, and the easterly part of upland north of the highway
  • daughter Elizabeth, wife of Robert Whitcomb, one ninth part being a portion of salt marsh
  • daughter Mehitable, wife of Stephen Chittenden, one ninth part being a portion of salt meadow
  • daughter Ruth, wife of Joseph Garrett, one ninth part being a portion of another salt marsh
  • daughter Deborah, wife of Henry Merritt, one ninth part being a portion of another salt marsh [8]

The division was allowed on March 11, 1696/7. [8]

On August 31, 1701, the one third dower of Frances Buck of Scituate, deceased, widow of Lt. Isaac Buck was divided into 9 parts among their children as follows:

  • to the legal representatives of Thomas, James and John Buck, all deceased
  • to sons Jonathan and Benjamin Buck
  • daughter Ruth, wife of Joseph Garrett
  • daughter Mehitable, wife of Stephen Chittenden
  • daughter Deborah, wife of Henry Merritt
  • daughter Elizabeth, wife of Robert Whitcomb [9]
