Biography

This profile is part of the Haverhill, Massachusetts One Place Study.

Onesephorus was the second son of George and Elizabeth Marsh. [1]

Note: his parents are said to have immigrated in 1635, so a 1630 birth date would imply he was born in England. But there seems to be some doubt as to whereabouts in England the family came from. Many early residents of Hingham, Massachusetts came from Hingham in England.

Onesiphorus resided first in Hingham. He took the freeman's oath there in 1672. On 2 July 1647, son "Oneseferes" was mentioned in the will of George Marsh of Hingham.

He removed to Haverhill MA about 1674. Onesiphorus was constable in 1687.

Onesephorus married three times: first, to Hannah Cutler; second to Mrs. Elizabeth Parrott Worcester in 1686; and third, to Mrs. Sarah Travers Wallingford of Bradford (now Haverhill), Massachusetts in 1691.

During the Indian attacks of 1690, the selectmen of Haverhill set up six garrisons and four "houses of refuge". One garrison, commanded by Sergt. John Hazeltine, was situated in a house and on land owned by Onesiphorus Marsh, the locality long known as Marsh's Hill. Onesiphorus Marsh and his son of the same name were among the seven men under Hazeltine's command.

Onesophorus Marsh died 15 May 1713 in Bradford, Massachusetts. In his will, dated August 21, 1703, he mentioned his wife (without stating her name); sons, John and Onesiphorus; daughters, Sarah Pike and Abigail Messer; granddaughter, Rebecca Kimball; and the children of his daughter, Mary Page, not named. John Marsh was named sole executor of his will, proved June 1, 1713.[2]
