Biography

Flag of England
William Marsh migrated from England to Connecticut Colony.
Flag of Connecticut Colony

William was born in England and died in 1724 at Plainfield, Connecticut. He was wounded during the King Phillips War in the Narraganset Swamp fight in 1675, and was removed to Stonington, Connecticut where he was treated by Dr. Noyce and nursed back to health by Elizabeth Yeomans, who he later married on October 18, 1681/2. She was the daughter of Edward and Mary (Button) Yeomans, (1630-1662) and was born in 1659 at Haverhill, Mass. She was admitted to the First Church, Stonington, Connecticut, August 24, 1690. William was admitted May 14, 1693. He surveyed with his wife's brother, Edward Yeomans, the town of Plainfield, Connecticut. He removed with his wife and family, no doubt, about 1694, to Plainfield, Connecticut as the last church record at Stonington is dated June 2, 1694.

Research Notes

Several traditions have been handed down through the Marsh family:
1) The family originated in Kent. They owned mills near London, and were engaged in the mercantile business.
2) William's father was Captain James Marsh of Elham who was killed at the Battle of Edgehill - this was the first pitched battle of the English Civil War. Some say he was executed by Cromwell after the battle. Another version holds that James Marsh was executed by the King, and that his sons were sent to America for safety.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

This story has been passed down in my family - I don’t know of a shred of proof for it. I’m sure it’s been inflated over time. At the time of the Battle of Edgehill, Oliver Cromwell was a Lieutenant in the cavalry (not the Lord Protector) and beheading was reserved for royalty. It could be James was ‘put to the sword’ after the battle if this happened at all. There’s also a version that says he was executed after the restoration for being a supporter of Cromwell. There is a list of men who were executed (hung, drawn, and quartered) but James was not one of them.

Interesting info on William Marsh at https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/80018594/person/38407118857/facts. There is the question of executed James Marsh being his brother or father.

There is no photo with FAG. Dwight William Marsh would appear to be in error.
